EXPOCHGO’25
VERÓNICA GÓMEZ /
Abr. 24, 2025 — Abr. 27, 2025
Galería COTT will present at EXPOCHICAGO 2025 a Solo Show by artist Verónica Gómez (Argentina, 1978).
Verónica Gómez conceives her artworks as an imaginary book unfolded in space. She is interested in moving the viewer through humour, drama and tenderness. Gothic horror and the stylistic preferences of the Argentinean middle class born in the middle of the 20th century come together in her artwork as an emotional manifesto of social belonging. A series of girls and women wearing strange costumes and placed in highly ornamented environments make up in his paintings a kind of dysfunctional and kindly family.
She is interested in the houses we are unable to leave and which haunt us in our dreams, the camouflages and coverings, the fable and the decorative whims. The morphology of those adaptive strategies that stoically persevere in their quest for survival.
“Although my painting has certain surrealist traits – the anomaly of the scenarios, the metamorphosis, the logic of collage, the rarefication of the familiar (the sinister) – the category that I find most in tune with is that of ‘the implausible real”. – Verónica Gómez
Her artwork behaves like a site specific, even though they are paintings that can be separated from the site where they were born. Verónica Gómez absorbs the stimulus that a place provides and from there new combinations and stories emerge.
At the beginning of this year she did an artist residency in Beijing. Influences from her surroundings have begun to creep into her new paintings. The style of the traditional hairstyles of the Chinese dynasties, the Shan Shui landscape, ornamental motifs such as the Pan Chang (auspicious knot) and the fanciful characters of the Dongyué Temple (an old Taoist temple built several times whose sculptures were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and then inventively replicated).
